We welcome all God's people to share the Victory of Christ
Community Lutheran Church

History of Community Lutheran Church
VISION
In the early 1990’s, a dedicated group of Lutherans (under the leadership of Bob Orem) saw a need for a Lutheran place of worship in lower Sussex County, Delaware. The group met with the Synod Bishop, the Regional director of Outreach and others in May 1990. After touring the area, the Director of Outreach concluded that the area could not support the effort.  One member of the Ministry Planning Committee (Rev. Richard Batman) thought that the area was promising.  CLC owes a great deal to his decision.  Services were held at Ocean View Presbyterian Church starting in 1991.  In January, 1994, the steering committee decided to go forward with plans and the Rev. Jerrett Hanson arranged for the ELCA-Mission investment fund to purchase the property in Omar and lease it to Community. The first worship service was held in the present Church building in Omar on May 1, 1994.

ACTION

In August, 1995, the Delaware / Maryland Synod Council voted to accept Community Lutheran Church as a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. On September 24, 1995 an official acceptance service was conducted. The final acceptance vote took place at the 1996 Synodical Assembly at St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  In 1996, Pastor Don Bauer was called as a part time Pastor.  In September 1996, a building committee was formed to develop recommendations for the congregation's future. The Reverend John Barton was called as the first full time pastor of Community Lutheran Church on December 1, 1998.

SHARE THE DREAM

Since 1995 CLC has grown approximately 125 %.  The present church building space was deemed to be inadequate for our congregation and anticipated growth.  An expanded building committee, chaired by Bob Druckenmiller, explored specific plans for the building.  Bob Hagelstein prepared the computer drawings, Bill Mixon built a scale model and Dave Bartges served as Building Expansion Fund Coordinator.  The groundbreaking service was conducted on Sunday January 6, 2002.  Construction started in March, 2002 and (due to some unexpected delays) was completed in March, 2003. On June 22, 2003 we dedicated our new Church building to the Glory of God and to the forwarding of His Mission. From the very beginning, it was obvious that the Holy Spirit had blessed us with His presence and continues to remain with us.
