Some of us recognize that we are on a “journey”; we are excited about how the Holy Spirit is guiding us and desire more. Many, I suspect, have no comprehension of their journey and, I hope, may receive nudges from the Holy Spirit through others sharing their own musings. My call to attend a prayer meeting or
A not-so-subtle push by the Holy Spirit
In 1972, my job with DuPont led to an assignment at Endo Laboratories in Garden City, Long Island, New York. Before moving to LI, we had been quite active at Grace Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Hockessin, DE. Pr. Dave Wasgatt was a close friend. However, I was going through the motions, I was not spiritually involved; I did a lot of “church work” not the work of the church. After getting settled, we had joined Resurrection LC” in Garden City – a beautifully landscaped Missouri Synod LC which welcomed us as Lutherans!
My wife Barb had become involved in a “new” charismatic prayer group at the church and repeatedly asked me if I would attend – I repeatedly said NO! But one Saturday she asked me, yet again, around noon – I said no and then went to take a nap. WAIT! I never ever took naps. When I awoke, I went to her and said, “Let’s go!” We did and my life has been changed ever since. In hindsight, this was the first most overt experience of the Holy Spirit guiding me. Since then and 50 years of prayer, it has been a continuing flurry of activity. Now that my “eyes” are open, I am aware of the Holy Spirit guiding, affirming, and challenging me to continue my spiritual journey. May you be similarly moved by the mystical touch of God.
